The Roman emperor, which was returned from the US as part of a study by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums into the recovery of historical artifacts smuggled out of Turkey in previous years. As a result of the struggle led by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums since 1980, almost 23,000 historical artifacts smuggled from Turkey abroad have been returned.

There are priceless artifacts such as Tired Heracles, Heracles’ sarcophagus and the Elmalı coin, the treasure of the century, among the artifacts that the ministry staff, with the support of scientists, tracked under bilateral international agreements with many countries and returned them back to the countries where they were stolen with their evidence.

Recently, 12 historical artifacts were brought back from New York, USA, thanks to the cooperation of institutions such as the embassy and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, and started to be displayed in the Antalya Museum.

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, who opened the exhibition, announced that work continues on the restoration of the missing life-size head of the rare bronze statue of the Roman emperor Septimus Severus, which is among the 12 works.

Exhibited in a museum in Denmark

Ministry staff continue to work to return a rare life-size bronze head of Roman Emperor Septimus Severus to Turkey.

The missing head of the bronze statue is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Auguste RodinNy Carlsberg, where ‘The Thinker Man’ has also been exhibited at the Glyptotek museum for many years.

Once part of the head is returned, the statue of Septimus Severus on display in the Antalya museum will be joined together, just like the statue of Weary Heracles, to ensure its integrity.

An illegal excavation was found in Burdur

Septimus Severus is a very rare and important work that was on loan at the Metropolitan Museum for some time. It was found as a result of illegal excavations carried out in the 1960s in the ancient city of Boubon, located in the village of Ibecik in the Gölhisar district of Burdur, and was taken abroad.

The statue, which is attributed to the Roman emperor Septimius Severus, who ruled between 193-211. year, is one of the few human-sized bronze statues that have survived to this day.
