British singer Linda Lewis, known for her 5-octave vocals as well as backing vocalists with famous names such as David Bowie, Rod Steward, Yusuf Islam, has passed away at the age of 72.
Known for his lyrics as well as his singing, Lewis achieved many successes during his 40-year career.
Lewis’ sister Dee Lewis Clay announced the news of his death on social media.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news that my beloved sister, Linda Lewis, passed away peacefully at her home today. Please respect our family’s privacy during this difficult time and allow us to grieve,” Clay wrote.
Compared to Minnie Riperton and Mariah Carey with her five-octave voice, Lewis also performed as a backing vocalist for the likes of David Bowie and Rod Stewart with solo success in the 1970s.
THE WONDERFUL LIFE OF LINDA LEWIS
Born in 1950 in West Ham, Lewis’ real name was Linda Ann Fredericks. After going to school for theater boards, he was engaged in acting for a while. We saw him as a screaming Beatles fan in the 1864 Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night.
He then turned to music, and when he signed to Polydor, he changed his last name to Lewis at the record company’s request. His sisters Dee and Shirley were also singers and also had the surname Lewis.
He performed at the first Glastonbury festival in 1970. In the next 10 years he made 4 top 40 hit songs. The first thing that came to mind was Rock-a-Doodle-Doo.
His biggest hit was “It’s in His Kiss”, which Cher later covered and performed as The Shoop Shoop Song.
We later saw Lewis at Yusuf Islam’s ex-Cat Stevens show. The duo went on tour together. Lewis, who is the backing vocalist of the band Yusuf Islam, married her musician friend Jim Cregan in 1977. However, this marriage lasted for 3 years.
Lewis released the last track Earthling with British band Paracosmos in March of this year.
